The novice actor took a direct part in the life of the theater, threw himself into new projects with passion, wanted to play in all productions at once. However, gradually the passion for alcohol, the ardent upholding of their positions, straightforwardness, coolness of temper began to bother the leader. So far, in the end, he did not remove the aspiring actor from work. However, he always spoke of Paulus as a characteristic actor, calling him "the conscience of the theater."

In the last years of his life he actively wrote. Two plays came out from under his pen. The first is a staging of two Steinbeck works, the second is Boulevard Novel, which Paulus completed work before his death. Neither one nor the other was put on the stage. Although Lev Durov, Mikhail Kozakov, Oleg Dal thought about staging the latter. The latter even talked with movie officials about the production. Those gave false hopes, time passed, and no action was taken. After the death of the actor, nobody was interested in the work at all.
