History of occurrence

The city of South Tarawa was formed after the independence of Kiribati in 1979. Initially, several nearby villages merged into the city. Over time, the population of Tarava rapidly increased in number, after which the South Tarava City Council came into being.

About 50 thousand people inhabit the capital of Kiribati. This place is considered the most densely populated in the entire Pacific Ocean.

The climate in South Tarawa is continental. On average, the temperature during the year is 26-28 degrees. During the rainy season, which lasts from October to April, storms occur here.
