The main pride of the museum is the largest collection of Kholmogorsk bone carving. To a large extent, it is composed of modern exhibits, but there are also works created by local craftsmen in the 16th century. It is worth noting that the works of carvers of our time are not inferior in mastery to samples of past times.

The museum’s collection, representing classical and contemporary art, is no less significant. Its important part is the work of Arkhangelsk painters. The most widely represented are works by older artists: Shiryaev, Preobrazhensky, Kotov, Sveshnikov, Lukoshkov.

For more than half a century of existence, the fund of the museum has increased 20 times. At this point, his exposition and treasury totals about 34 thousand items.

Since 1994, the museum has included a complex of architectural buildings of monuments of national importance. They are located in the historical part of Arkhangelsk, in the architectural and conservation zone. The exhibition tells about the art of the Arkhangelsk region, the formation and flowering of which took place in stages. It all started with the appearance of icon painting in the XIV – XV centuries, reaching its full prosperity in the XVII – XVIII centuries. The surviving exhibits of northern icons were in cities, villages, monasteries and represent a huge variety of stylistic performance. The collection includes icons from Kargopol, Solvychegodsk, Anthony-Siya and Solovetsky monasteries. It is worth noting that, in addition to masterful works, in the northern regions for many years a peasant environment of icon painting of Podviny and Ponezhye was formed. The basis of the artists' work was archaic traditions.

Of particular note is the collection of old Russian sculptures made of wood, which is one of the best collections in the country. The North has always been famous for its love and ability to create from wood. Skillfully carved wooden icons of patron saints from time immemorial stood in churches and chapels, for worship of believers.

Exhibition "Kholmogorsk bone carving"

The exhibition presents unique exhibits made of bone from the 1960s of the last century, carved by eminent Kholmogory masters A. Shtang, G. Osipov, O. Lokhov, G. Chernakova, I. Maklakova, V. Vatlin, A. Guryev. Literally from the moment of its foundation, the museum acquired the best creations. This is the most extensive collection of Kholmogorsk carved bone by modern authors.

Religious objects are distinguished with particular beauty: icons, images, crosses and other cult products. They are made of walrus, mammoth and ordinary cow bone, as well as from a sperm whale tooth. Kholmogorsk craftsmen have all the necessary processing techniques to create valuable exhibits.
