In 1986, Cleveland's United Way put forward the idea of how to create an advertisement for the city and arrange a celebration for locals. They offered to inflate and release into the sky a record number of balloons.
Very many people liked the idea, and crowds of volunteers for several days inflated helium balloons, which were placed under a huge grid. On the appointed day, the organizers took to the stage in front of the audience and, after the countdown, released all the balloons into the sky.
Unfortunately, they could not imagine what the consequences of their action would be. The mistake of the Cleveland United Way led to the deaths of two people and to many lawsuits. In addition, cleaning after this event took several weeks.

Tragic consequences
