The name of the village was first mentioned in 1679. Existing as a peasant settlement on one of the high-water branches of the Irtysh Tobol River, the village has become a city since 1782. Since 1894, the Trans-Siberian Railway has become a link between the Kurgan and the central regions of Russia. The Great Patriotic War made the city an evacuation center of industrial enterprises from Belarus, Ukraine and the Moscow region.
