In the country of eternal snow, where the polar bear lives, this predator is considered one of the largest and most ferocious. Nevertheless, he often prefers vegetable food to meat and does it more often than other predators.

Polar bear. Description

Image

The food of the polar bears is mixed, and this was reflected in the structure of powerful fangs. The surface of molars in these animals is uneven and flat, which is convenient for chewing any kind of food.

With the help of paws with sharp claws, predators tear prey to pieces and dig out edible fruits and roots from the ground. On each limb - 5 long fingers, sharp claws on which are not retracted.

It is very strange, but these predatory animals cannot boast of perfect hearing and sharp vision. Polar bears do not see objects as voluminous, because the fields of view of their eyes overlap. But the sense of smell in animals is much better developed. In order to understand what is around, a predator often has to get up on its hind legs, turn its head and examine everything with its nose.

A bear is a large animal, weighing 400-700 kg, 240-260 cm long. Females are somewhat smaller - weigh 200-500 kg, and their length is about 190-210 cm.

Adapting to living in harsh climates

The size of the bear depends on its type, but the body structure of all is approximately the same: strong, but short legs, large head, powerful body and short tail. Since it is cold in the places where the polar bear lives, warm fur cannot be dispensed with. Thick and dense coat helps to keep warm and protects the body from getting wet. Moreover, not only the body and head are covered with fur, but also the soles of the paws. A thick layer of subcutaneous fat allows you to endure the harsh climatic conditions of the Arctic, where the polar bear lives.

Color

The white color of the animal merges with snow, which serves as an ideal camouflage on the hunt when hunting for prey. But there are also individuals with a yellowish tint of fur. It mainly depends on the season and lifestyle of the bears.

In winter and late autumn, animal hair is pure white in color, it acquires a yellowish tint at the end of summer. If the area where the polar bear lives is surrounded by ice, and there is no access to water completely, then the shade of the animal’s fur is more white compared to the fur of animals that spend a lot of time in water.

Habitat

The habitat of polar bears takes place in the Arctic, a country of eternal ice. Animals almost never leave the limits of floating ice and the coast. More often bears are found in places with open areas of water, because here you can get food. Beasts spend hours wandering along the edge of the ice or near wormwood, looking for larger prey, such as seals.

Roaming, they often find themselves on land, and in the event of ice moving away from the coast, they can get stuck on some island for a long time. Then they have to eat garbage, lemmings, roots and branches of dwarf willows.
