How are shoulder straps sewn?

The form must always be impeccable and meet all the requirements of the charter. Particular attention when bringing uniforms into proper shape should be given to sewing on shoulder straps. Despite the fact that the Ministry of Emergency Situations is considered a non-army structure, in this department, as well as in the army, the shoulder straps of the Ministry of Emergencies are of great importance. How to sew them to a tunic? This issue is often encountered when it is necessary to equip outer clothing with insignia.

The process of sewing on shoulder straps is simple. This work will require the necessary materials and knowledge. The availability of the necessary tools and phased implementation guarantees a perfect result.

What tools will be needed?

  • Ruler.

  • Needles with a thimble. The presence of a thimble will protect against injury to the fingers with a needle.

  • A thread. It must be durable and match the color of the trim.

  • Pliers or tweezers. These devices are useful when pulling a needle with a colored thread from the shoulder strap.

Completing of the work

The procedure for sewing epaulettes consists of several stages:

  • Preparation of the epaulette. The job is to fasten insignia (stars, bows) on an un sewn pursuit. When it is already sewn, this procedure is complicated.

  • The location of the shoulder strap on the form. It must be placed in such a way that it rests on its seam away from the button against the seam connecting the shoulder with the sleeve in the tunic. On top of the shoulder strap at 10 mm should be located with an overlap of the seam running along the shoulder. Thus, it is very important to carry out a shoulder strap offset of 10 mm.

  • Fixing epaulettes to a tunic. This procedure can be completely performed using a thread of a different color (at the end of the work it is easy to remove). The shoulder strap is fixed in three places: in the corners, at the point of contact with the sleeve seam and in the center. For temporary fastening, pins can also be used. This will prevent a possible shift of shoulder straps on the tunic.

  • Sewing epaulettes. Work is done along its perimeter with the help of stitches. This stage of the work should be carried out very carefully, so that on top of the shoulder strap you can see subtle points from piercing with a needle and thread. The thread itself must necessarily pass from the inside. In this case, it will not be visible, even if it will be a different color than the shoulder strap. Each stitch should have an optimum length of 10 mm. To facilitate the process, it is recommended to place shoulder straps on the tunic so that their lower parts correspond to the seams with which the sleeves are sewn. This will make it possible to insert the needle into existing seam openings. Sewing should be done along the line connecting the edging and its main part.

You can quickly cope with this work if a tunic is prepared in advance. During the process itself, it is recommended to use a thimble, even if it works well without it. Those who have extensive experience in this matter, note that through the shoulder straps the sewing needle passes with difficulty. This situation can be corrected using pliers or tweezers. With these tools you can push the needle like a thimble, or grab one edge of it, pull it through the shoulder strap. According to this technology, epaulets of various structures are sewn: police officers, the Federal Penitentiary Service, the air force and the Ministry of Emergencies. Shoulder straps are removed only from the summer uniform. The winter version does not provide for this, since epaulets that are non-removable are sewn on tunics.
