early years
The future commander of the Pacific Fleet, Sergei Avakyants, was born in April 1958 in the capital of the Armenian SSR, Yerevan. His father was Navy officer Joseph Serapionovich Avakyants - an ethnic Armenian.
Sergei graduated from school in his native city in 1975, after which he entered the Nakhimov Black Sea Naval School, located in Sevastopol. This school has fame as one of the best military institutions in the country, and a glorious history dating back to 1937. He graduated from Avakyants in 1980.
Service at Admiral Yumashev
After undergoing training at the school, Sergey Avakyants was sent to serve in the Navy, immediately receiving an officer post.
From 1980 to 1989 he spent on the ship "Admiral Yumashev." This is a large anti-submarine ship with a displacement of 7535 tons, which was commissioned in 1978 and became part of the Northern Fleet, based on the Baltic Sea. The Military Academy is one of the oldest army-oriented educational institutions. It was founded in 1832 as the Imperial Military Academy. Transfer to the Pacific Fleet
Immediately after graduating from this higher educational institution, Sergei Iosifovich was determined the chief of staff of the Novorossiysk base of the Black Sea Fleet. There, Avakyantsu, with the rank of Rear Admiral, was entrusted with the command of the Primorsky Flotilla of the Pacific Fleet. This unit was a union of diverse forces, and was formed back in 1979. It was deployed in the Primorsky Territory, in the following settlements: Vladivostok, Fokino, Bolshoi Kamen and Slavyanka.
Sergey Iosifovich served as commander of this unit from September 2007 to August 2010.
Path to the post of commander of the Pacific Fleet
In August 2010, Avakyants was transferred to the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet. Moreover, he became the chief of this headquarters. At the same time, he also served as First Deputy Commander of the Pacific Fleet.
The Pacific Fleet is one of the most important large units of the Russian Navy. The history of its origin dates back to 1731, when the Russian Empire was firmly established on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean. Back in Soviet times, Sergei Iosifovich was awarded the Order "For Service to the Homeland." In 1996, he was awarded the Order of Military Merit.
