The chair, its photograph, the definition of the meaning of the word "chair" from the dictionary. Together, this is a work of art. Namely conceptual. A concept is a term that has many meanings (comes from the Latin “conceptus”, which translates as “concept”). If you explain it simply and readily, then this word is interpreted as an innovative, fresh idea aimed at creation. For example, there are so-called "concept cars".
These are cars of the future, prototypes of developments in this area in terms of design, technical component and style in general. Typically, such machines do not go on sale, but are exhibits. At the auto show, the public is invited to evaluate new ideas. Based on feedback and reactions, manufacturers decide the future fate of know-how: to introduce or not to introduce. Examples of such cars, which are a concept, are Mercedes-Benz F700, which is capable of detecting irregularities of the road surface and driving around them, or BMW Gina (the frame made of elastic material of this car allows it to modify its shape). But the design of the Ford Jossis was the prototype for the generation of Ford Mondeo cars. The Russian concept of such a plan is the well-known E-mobile, a hybrid car with electric transmission.
The branch of postmodernism
If we return to the fact that the concept is an art, then it must be said that one of the pioneers in the conceptualism direction is Joseph Kossuth, the same author of the composition “Three Chairs”, with which the narrative of this article began. Other famous figures include the widow of John Lennon Yoko Ono, Vanessa Beecroft, who uses model girls in her performance, Simon Starling (he converted a wooden shed into a boat, sailed in this boat on the river, then returned to its original form again, i.e. put together a barn). The latter received for this achievement the Turner Prize (established in 1984, a prestigious award in the field of contemporary art). In general, conceptualism is one of the branches of postmodernism.
The most important thing for a conceptual artist is to convey his idea to the viewer. And in what ways - he already decides for himself. For him, a concept is photographs, diagrams, objects, audio recordings, phrases, graphics. In a word, a conceptualist uses anything to express the essence of an idea. But the direction in art, designed to fully reflect only thought, and not the external form or other visible attributes, is called concept art.
From a language point of view
A language concept is what is accepted in philology as an author’s idea, and in some cases a sustainable language with its traditional embodiment. We can say that this is an analogue of the motive. A social concept can be considered as a product of a certain society, viable only because people are ready to obey its rules or agree to recognize that it exists. If we compare two definitions: “concept” and “concept” (from which, as already mentioned, the first word came from) - then, although they are formally synonymous, their use is delineated. The second word appears mainly in philosophy and logic, and the first is used only in mathematical logic, and much more often in cultural studies. In the rarest cases, a concept is identified with a syngificate.
