In the city of Saransk in 1960 an art gallery was opened bearing the name of the famous artist F.V. Sychkova. After some time, a reorganization took place, as a result of which the gallery received the status of a museum of fine arts. It is called after the famous Russian artist, master of wooden sculpture Stepan Erzi.

A lot of research work is underway, the result of which is the release of new albums, monographs, collections of articles.

The formation of collections in the museum took many years.
