Moscow has many world-famous museums: the Tretyakov Gallery or the Pushkin Museum, the Diamond Fund and others. And there are more “modest”, not so popular places, but this does not mean that they are less interesting for visitors. An example is the Lefortovo History Museum, founded in 1999.

A few words about the Lefortovo area

German settlement - this is the name of this district of the capital since the time of Ivan the Terrible. The king took this place on the banks of the Yauza River for the settlement of captured foreigners. Most of them did not know the Russian language. Residents of Moscow called them dumb, and after that this nickname was transformed into the word "Germans" and gave the name to the settlement - German.

Foreign settlers received from the authorities the right to produce intoxicating drinks (beer, wine). This can explain the fact that the indigenous people disliked the inhabitants of the settlement, since they were forbidden to produce alcohol. All this led to enmity, the German settlement was often ruined.

In the Time of Troubles, it was completely destroyed, and later restored (under Peter I). The appearance of palaces and parks here is due to the fact that the tsar temporarily placed his residence on the banks of the Yauza River.

An associate, Franz Lefort, took an active part in the restoration of the German settlement (along with Peter I), whose surname gave the name to this area of Moscow.

The emperor’s residence, a beautiful palace and a European-style park turned the former German settlement into an aristocratic place. Many noble families built their country houses here.

Lefortovo for many years after Peter I remained the residence of the rulers of the Russian Empire. Also, the area developed as an industrial center. During the revolution and Soviet times, the status of an industrial and military center was preserved beyond this area. During the Great Patriotic War, anti-aircraft installations, ambulance trains were produced at factories in Lefortovo.

It is in the expositions of the Lefortovo History Museum that the fate of the region is reflected.
