The problem that arose at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century is the dominance of plastic non-degradable dishes that pollute the environment. However, there are people who boldly tackle complex problems. One of these geniuses who turns ordinary avocados into 100% biodegradable plastic utensils: knives, forks, spoons, straws, is a simple student.
The idea of creating plastic from avocado
Chemical student Scott Manguia wanted to solve some problems of environmental pollution, so he worked in this direction. To do this, he was looking for reliable material from which biodegradable plastic could be made.
He tested the properties of many materials, mainly using the seeds of various fruits. These were the seeds of mango and sapot. He studied materials about a molecule of corn, which was used by chemists to make bioplastics. Then he got the idea to use avocado seeds in the same way. He worked for a year and a half on a method to extract a chemical compound from unnecessary seeds.
Finally, he managed to get a polymer from which it was possible to start the production of forks and knives. The peculiarity of this plastic material was that products from ordinary plastic had been biodegradable in the earth for 100 years, and 240 days, that is, about eight months, had been obtained from avocado seeds.

Avocado Seed Processing Plants
In 2013, the development of chemist Scott Manguy was patented. In 2015, Biofase, a company formed by Scott, launched its first plant. He processed avocado seeds and sold biodegradable resin as a raw material.
The following year, the second plant was launched, the production of which is the production of bioplastic devices, and in February 2017 the production of plastic straws began. The relative cost of bioplastics is about 40% higher than the dishes that are made on an oil basis.
The issue of price reduction has been resolved. Bioplastics made from nutrients (corn) are more expensive, and products based on biophase waste, which are seeds of avocados, reduce costs. That allows the production of Biofase to be an undeniable alternative to conventional plastic, both economically and environmentally.
