Three-year-old Malik unwittingly became the bone of contention between his Syrian father and his Russian grandmother. After the sudden death of his mother, the baby lived in Ivanteevka, near Moscow, under the care of a grandmother, who secretly from her father and his relatives took her grandson to Cheboksary, where she was baptized in the Orthodox faith.
Separated by war
Malik's father, Anas Kassem, according to family tradition, came to Moscow from Syria to get an education. In Russia, his parent studied, and then the brothers. Some of them did not want to return to their homeland, but found work, got married and became Russian citizens. After studying for four years at the dentist, Anas never received a diploma, but he met Svetlana N., whom he fell in love with.
Young people happily lived in a civil marriage until they went to Syria to meet Anas’s relatives. The moment for the trip was chosen very poorly. The Syrian military conflict flared up, Svetlana and Anas, saving lives, ended up in refugee status in Turkey, where it turned out that the girl was pregnant. Svetlana did not want to give birth in a foreign country and went to Ivanteevka to her mother.
Anas flew to Australia to visit his sister, wanting to obtain a residence permit and prepare documents for the official move of a common-law wife and child. In August 2015, Svetlana gave birth to a boy and named him Malik. During the forced separation, young parents constantly talked on the Internet, made plans for the future, Anas even at a distance continued to provide materially for his family.
Sudden death
When the necessary documents for Malik and Svetlana were ready, it turned out that the boy did not have the necessary vaccinations. Moving to Australia was postponed for a while. But then misfortune happened: Svetlana fell ill with mastitis, but did not go to the doctors on time, and the not-so-terrible disease turned into a deadly blood poisoning. Specialists were powerless. So Malik was left without a mother in the arms of his own grandmother.

The funeral was paid for by the Kassem family, and Anas decided to quickly pick up his son and bring him up on his own. Before his arrival in Russia, custody of the child was drawn up in the name of her grandmother, who clearly did not want her grandson to leave the country. Therefore, she took Malik away from Moscow and her father to her native Cheboksary, where she changed his faith and name, being baptized in Orthodoxy and calling him Maxim.
Searches for the son
Anas was not going to put up with this state of affairs. Appearing in Russia, he immediately did a DNA test and through court proved his legal paternity. After that, the Syrian not only wrote a statement to the police about the search for his son, but he himself set about searching. He spent hours scouring the streets of Cheboksary and eventually met Malik with his grandmother.
Happy Anas was sure that he would be able to pick up his son without problems and red tape. However, Cheboksary law enforcement officers left the baby with her grandmother, believing in her version of the events. She was afraid that the child would be taken away from Russia forever, and did not want to give her grandson to a stranger to her, whose life she knew nothing about.
