There is such a thing as the Global Peace Index. Studies on this issue are conducted by the Peace Institute in order to determine the level of peacefulness. In general, to determine this level, more than 22 factors are estimated: the number of killings, the political situation, the number of prisoners in prisons, the percentage of weapons per capita, etc.

Research has been conducted only since 2007, but throughout this time, Iceland has been considered the most peaceful and safe country for both the local population and tourists. What are the most criminal countries in the world? The worst performance in the Middle East and the African continent. In this part of the world, military conflicts, a high level of terrorist threat and many other negative factors have not subsided for a long time.

Syria

According to the Institute of Economics and Peace, at the beginning of 2018, the most criminal country in the world is Syria. She took the lead with a score of 3.814. This is a fairly large state with more than 18 million people.

Since 1963, the Ba'ath Party has been in power in the country, although formally it is a presidential republic. And in 2011, a civil war began in Syria, which continues to this day. Fierce fighting does not stop in many cities, and some settlements are generally controlled by terrorists. According to the most conservative estimates, about 450 thousand people have died in the country since the start of the war. But in spite of everything, the size of GDP per capita is $ 6, 375.

Afghanistan

The second position in the top of the most criminal countries in the world is Afghanistan (35.53 million people). The Institute of Economics and Peace assigned an index of 3, 567 to it. Here, a military civil conflict has been going on for several decades. Although everything has already subsided a little, rebel resistance periodically arises. Today, the rebels are demanding the complete withdrawal of all foreign troops from the state. NATO forces intervened in the conflict in 2001.

Nevertheless, in comparison with some countries there is a rather good indicator of GDP per capita and amounts to 1, 958 thousand dollars. According to the form of government, Afghanistan is an Islamic republic.

Iraq

A relatively small state in the Middle East, with a population of just over 38 million people. The form of government is a federal parliamentary republic.

The military conflict in the country lasted from 2003 to 2011. Today, domestic tensions are somewhat lower, however, some parts of the state are still under the control of terrorists. The level of peacefulness is estimated at 3, 556. That is, it’s too early to talk about stability, and new uprisings can begin at any moment. In terms of GDP per capita, the country is not in the last place, the indicator is 16 954 dollars.

South sudan

Another most criminal country with a peaceful indicator of 3.52, which does not attract tourists at all. The conflict arose in 2011, when 98% of the local population voted to secede from Sudan. However, already in an independent state the conflict between the opposition and the government continues to this day. Against this background, the local population is dying and the movement of residents is severely limited both within the country and outside the state.

Today, 12.576 million people live in the country, GDP per capita is at a very low level and amounts to $ 1, 489.

Yemen

The five leaders of the most criminal countries in the world closes the presidential republic of Yemen. A country located in southwest Asia, with a population of 28.250 million people.

The current totalitarian regime was overthrown as far back as 1991, but the political situation has not stabilized, just like the economic one, there is not even the possibility of determining GDP per capita. The state has complete anarchy, which affected not only local residents, but also ships navigating along Somalia. Today, 14, 743, 000 people live in the country.

Libya

In the old days, this state developed rapidly and was one of the safest in all of Africa, and possibly the world. Even today, per capita GDP is $ 9, 986. However, huge oil reserves haunt many countries. Many regions of the country are under constant threat of terrorist attacks, people are disappearing, and the authorities are unable to restore order.

More than six million people live in the state, the official form of government is a parliamentary republic, but de facto there is a complete lack of stability, and the level of peace is at around 3.328.

South Africa gained independence from France in 1960, but the first democratic elections were held only in 1993. The form of government is the presidential republic. It was possible to maintain a peaceful environment within the borders only until 2004. Gradually, clashes erupted. The warring parties to the conflict are Christians, Muslims and the government. Despite the signing of several peace agreements, the situation in the country is not improving.

Sudan

In the country, the level of peacefulness is at around 3.213. Independence was gained in 1956, and Sudan became a presidential republic. But from this point on, the civil war does not stop in the country. Almost everyone is at war, conflicts arise against the backdrop of ethnic heterogeneity, due to internal political views. The country does not respect human rights, although the legal system is completely based on Islam.

Ukraine

So which country is the most criminal? Oddly enough, even the post-Soviet country Ukraine with a rating of peacefulness of 3.184 was included in the rating.

Ukraine is a parliamentary-presidential country, about 44 million people live here. GDP per capita in 2017 is $ 8, 713.

The country recently fell into this rating, and this is due to the military conflict in the eastern part. Despite the fact that in other regions it is relatively calm, the crime rate is still defined as very high, so there are no guarantees for tourists regarding their safety while traveling.
