The origins

Image

Verkhnesvirskoe, Rybinskoe, Sheksninskoe reservoirs are three large man-made reservoirs existing in the Vologda Oblast. The last of the mentioned reservoirs has an unusual shape, due to its transition from a narrow valley, along which it passes almost 40 km, into a wide channel. The Sheksninskoe reservoir (sometimes called the Cherepovetsky because of the proximity of the city of Cherepovets) was formed on the left tributary of the Volga - the Sheksna River - with the help of the Sheksninskaya hydroelectric dam.

The origins of the ancient waterway, mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years, are located in White Lake. The river almost completely got out of its natural channel after the construction of the Rybinsk and Sheksninsky waterworks on it. 20 rivers flow into it. On the territory of the reservoir there are two ancient cities - Kirillov and Belozersk.

History of creation

Image

The Sheksninskoe reservoir was filled in 1963-1964. This is one of the main parts of which the Volga-Baltic water system consists, as well as the most important element of the North-Dvina sluice path. It took several years to prepare the bed of the future reservoir. The total area of flooded land amounted to more than 530 km 2. In the 50s, the Sheksninsky timber industry enterprise was created in Kirillov - an enterprise for logging. Decks for deforestation were organized throughout Sheksna.

The construction of the reservoir in the middle of the 20th century became one of the largest construction projects in the USSR. In the Vologda Oblast, representatives of different nationalities worked, local residents and those who arrived on Komsomol trips. Especially many visitors were in the winter. By 1962, forest on lands ready for flooding was cut down. People from nearby settlements were relocated to Belozersk, Kirillov, Lipin Bor, Cherepovets. Migrants were given money to compensate for losses. Many did not want to move from their homes, but had to obey. Some were transporting the remains of recently buried relatives with them to a new place.

The village of Krokhino, an ancient settlement on the shores of White Lake, was flooded more than 50 years ago during the construction of the reservoir. But the Church of the Nativity of Christ remained on the Volga-Baltic Route as a symbolic lighthouse, helping ships not to lose the right course. It can be seen in the movie "Kalina Red" created by V. M. Shukshin: the temple appears on the screens during the most important episodes in the life of the protagonist.
