Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican to win the United States presidential election. Many historians believe that the beard brought him victory, not his election program. It is possible that this was so, because usually Republican politicians were shaved smoothly, but their opponents, on the contrary, wore beards and enjoyed the support of the vast majority of American citizens.

How did Lincoln feel about his beard?

The 16th head of the White House did not always wear a beard. On the contrary, Lincoln shaved most of his life. He hated facial hair, they irritated him very much.

Why didn't the president like beards? None of his biographers can clearly answer this question. It is quite possible that the facial hair simply disturbed him, as, for example, many people bangs covering his forehead. It is possible that the roots of hostility go back to childhood. Abraham Lincoln's father was an ordinary farmer and, of course, wore a beard.

What has changed Lincoln’s attitude towards the beard?

The beard adorned Lincoln's face in 1860. This happened due to one strange event. Abraham Lincoln began the election race and, of course, traveled around the country a lot, met people, spoke to them, gave interviews to journalists.

But the Republican candidate was not particularly successful. This really bothered Lincoln, because he was going to "change the world." Are his ideas not close to people? Why then become the head of state? Overcome by such thoughts, Lincoln parsed the letters of citizens who came to his campaign headquarters.

One letter interested him. It was written by a child, an 11-year-old girl named Grace. She wrote that she would support Lincoln in the elections, if she could, but he is unlikely to be able to win them if he looks like that.

The future president was surprised and carefully read the letter. Grace wrote that he has "a very thin face and is not particularly nice to look at." The girl reasoned very interestingly, she wrote that in her family there were five men - a father and four brothers. But they all "obey my mother." And if all men listen to women, then to win the election they need to like it, but for this a beard is needed. “Women are pleased to look at men with a beard, grow them, then you will win, ” Grace wrote.
