A kiss on the cheek is a ritual or social gesture that indicates friendship, family relations, performing the function of greeting, congratulating, comforting someone, showing respect.
Kisses on the cheek are common throughout the world (Southern, Central, Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and so on). In many countries, such as the United States, France and Japan, kissing is the norm at international meetings of heads of state and first ladies or members of royal and imperial families. Why is this long tradition now in jeopardy in France?
