The history of the museum began back in 1866. Its main purpose was the storage of household items and industry of the Tver region, in addition, archaeological finds and natural wealth found on Tver land are collected there.

In 1896, the Tver State United Museum acquired a permanent place of residence in the outbuilding of the Imperial Travel Palace, which at that time served as a male gymnasium. He repeatedly moved and changed the name. So, until the October Revolution, it was called the Tver Historical and Archaeological Museum and was located in the western wing of the former Travel Palace. In 1918, his collection was recognized as one of the richest among the provincial. The museum funds then totaled about fifteen thousand ancient monuments.

After the revolution, until 1928, it was called the Tver State Museum, and in 1935 it moved to Sovetskaya Street in the Ascension Church and was called the Kalinin Museum of Local Lore. This name has been preserved until 1976.

By the beginning of World War II, the collection of exhibits of the Tver State United Museum was about 100 thousand. During the war years, almost all of them were destroyed.

In 1995, the museum returned to the building of the former male gymnasium. By 2010, it had about 400 thousand exhibits and 32 branches. These included the literary museum and art gallery.
