Recently, a large group of several hundred scuba divers equipped with environmentally friendly instruments set a world record for underwater cleaning of the ocean.

Last week, 633 divers, putting on their wetsuits and masks, managed to collect a large number of fishing gear and plastic waste on the ocean floor. It happened at the Deerfield Beach international fishing pier in Florida.

How much garbage was collected?

The total weight of all garbage collected is not yet fully calculated. Some officials claim that about 1, 626 pounds (approximately 737 kilograms) of rubbish and 60 pounds (about 27 kilograms) of fishing line were collected and recovered as a result of this cleaning operation. In the future, these wastes will be sorted and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.

“It’s completely unimportant what’s happening with the Guinness Book of Records, ” commented Guinness judge Michael Emprik in an interview with Sun Sentinel. “What is really exciting and important is that many are ready to clean around the pier and make attempts to improve society, the environment and life on Earth.”

Annual ocean cleanup

As part of the annual cleanup of the ocean, this procedure was the fifth in a row. It is organized with the joint participation of diver Dixie Divers and the women's club from Deerfield Beach. The previous world record was set in Egypt in 2015. Then 614 divers took part in the action.

Divers in Florida say they are very happy to contribute to the cleansing of the world's oceans that are suffering from human hands. Indeed, environmental support is not only a fashionable trend. At the moment, it should become part of the life of any conscious person. People are used to consuming and not thinking about the most serious consequences and threats to nature that are inevitable in the modern way of life.
