Last Sunday, a girl who was fond of hiking in nature posted an interesting video on the Internet. It clearly shows how a huge ice floe of perfectly round shape slowly rotates around its axis in the meltwater of the river.

The record that appeared on Vkontakte in the Voronezh Walk group quickly gathered a huge amount of views. The girl who posted the video filming said that she saw such an unusual ice disk on the Voronezh River, near Lipetsk, in the village of Sindyakino.

Netizens vividly discussed this natural phenomenon. Various versions were put forward - from the trail of aliens to the fake, adjusted by the author of the video. So what is this mysterious ice disk really? Let's find out.

Something out of the ordinary or just a rare occurrence?

Scientists observe and record rotating ice disks. And it turns out that this phenomenon occurs in the world only several times a year. Of course, only in those parts where the rivers freeze. So, in 2019, a similar phenomenon was observed in March on the Dvina River in Vitebsk (Belarus). And in January, the largest disk - 91 meters in diameter - was spotted on the Prespumskot River in the city of Westbruck (Maine, USA).

A phenomenal natural phenomenon can occur not only during ice drift, but also when the body of water just begins to freeze. In November, a spinning disk appeared on the Genhe River in northern China. Most often, this ice floe is very fragile, all covered with cracks. But the disk, which appeared on the Liao River (China) in January, was so strong that people were not afraid to step on it.

First explanation: the disc creates a river flow

When warm water comes in contact with cold water, a difference in density arises. The ice floe gradually begins to grow, cooling the surface of the river. But the current, rotating it, “bites” its edges, it polishes it with rotational movements until a piece of frozen water becomes perfectly round in shape.

Second explanation: the disc creates a river bend

A reverse flow is created on the meander site and a whirlpool forms. Stremnina, touching the edge of the ice floe, makes it rotate, taking with it all the bumps, until you get the perfect drive.
