“I got a good grade, ” “Quite a bad mark!” - in these expressions and in colloquial words the words "rating" and "mark" are often used as absolute synonyms, but is this correct? What are the criteria for their presentation in different areas, what is the difference between them, what types they are and what or who can be assessed - all this will be described below.

Let's turn to the dictionary

The word "mark" has several meanings that are similar to each other only in that they are talking about determining the value of a particular phenomenon by any parameter. The main interpretations of the dictionary entry give three:

  • directly the process of evaluating, determining the quality parameters and quantity of something;

  • any opinion, review or judgment about something or about someone;

  • the mark that students put in educational institutions.

As you can see, in the latter case, the words “mark” and “mark” become synonyms, especially in the field of education, intersect in their meanings, but still they have some differences, which will be discussed below. The main meanings of the word "mark" are as follows:

  • a sign indicating something or the process of setting such signs;

  • registering something record;

  • some symbol of knowledge and / or behavior of the student;

  • designation by numbers of the height of an object in relation to sea level or another point taken as a reference point.

Grades and grades in the classroom

Despite the frequent use of the concepts of "grade" and "grade", even in school life there is a significant difference between them. The mark is an indicator of student's performance relative to any ideal, expressed in numbers or points. At the same time, assessment is an indicator of the student’s performance, his growth relative to his indicators at the beginning of the current stage of training.

The latter is a broader and more accurate characterization of student knowledge, as it often also includes some recommendations that may be useful. Translation of the assessment results into points greatly reduces their value and content, moreover, it can turn the learning process into a pursuit of mark for the mark itself.

How to evaluate performance?

In the case of activities, evaluation is a fairly formal procedure for evaluating the activities of an employee, most often associated with the collection of information about how successfully he performs the tasks assigned to him. Moreover, the assessment is both in comparison with the results of other people, and in comparison with the employee’s own results in the past. In this case, performance appraisal, also called labor appraisal, is a multilateral process. It takes into account both the performance of the activity and the discipline of the employee, his reputation and their impact on the overall success of the work.

What is an assessment of the conditions in which a work takes place?

By what parameters is this position displayed? In a conversation about working conditions, assessment is a set of activities whose task is to identify harmful and / or dangerous environmental factors in which the work takes place, correlate them with established standards and determine how they affect the health of employees and the success of their activities. Such an assessment involves several stages:

  • identification of hazards in the workplace;

  • assessment of how the conditions at workplaces comply with labor protection requirements;

  • monitoring the situation on the ground with dangerous and / or harmful working conditions;

  • the establishment of special guarantees for workers with dangerous and / or harmful working conditions and the payment of statutory compensation.

Examples of enterprises where such inspections are carried out much more frequently include nuclear power plants, plants and factories associated with the chemical industry, mines and drilling rigs.

What is artwork appreciation?

Quite often, not only phenomena of applied significance are subjected to evaluation, but also cultural phenomena. For example, works of art are regularly evaluated. In this case, an assessment is a determination of how much a work meets certain criteria given in advance. Two coordinate systems can be distinguished here: modern, which includes exclusively the criterion of the innovativeness of the work, its novelty, and the traditional system, which includes several factors at once:

  • aesthetic criterion, which includes both the idea of the beautiful and the ugly, as well as the criterion of expressiveness and inexpressiveness;

  • epistemological criterion containing such pairs as “true - false”, “understandable - incomprehensible”, “reasonable - unreasonable”;

  • moral and ethical criterion, evaluating a work of art from the point of view of morality, normality, creativity and destructiveness;

  • emotionally-evaluative criterion, the most subjective of those listed, evaluating a work, for example, from the perspective of how interesting it is for a person.
