The largest collection of Russian painting

Tretyakov Gallery - this is the name of the world's largest museum of Russian painting. Everyone who appreciates our history and poetry of every corner of the country wants to get here. Artists depicted their inner world on canvases, with love and understanding collected by Pavel Sergeyevich Tretyakov.

P. S. Tretyakov, along with his brother, also a collector and philanthropist, grew up in the family of a merchant of the third guild. He received a home education, which allowed only to engage in commercial affairs. But the innate taste, as well as the desire to benefit society, led him to collect paintings by masters of Russian painting. His selection was impeccable. Buying a painting already meant that we had an artist of the highest class, and the workmanship is extremely high.

How the museum was created

The apartment building of Pavel Mikhailovich stood in Zamoskvorechye. There he placed his first acquisitions made in 1856. The collection grew rapidly and turned into an art museum. Moscow and Muscovites did not yet realize how widespread this initiative would be. In 1874, a two-story building was built. It connected to the house of Pavel Mikhailovich. Through a separate entrance, anyone could visit it.

This building is constantly being completed. In the end, it surrounded the house on three sides. So the art museum was formed. Moscow received it as a gift in 1892.

XX century

After the death of the founder, the entire complex of buildings in Lavrushinsky Lane according to the sketch of V. M. Vasnetsov was united by one common facade. That is how the whole world knows him. Years passed, trustees and directors changed, the exposition grew. Too much was stored in storage. In 1985, it was decided that the State Art Gallery would be merged with the Tretyakov Gallery.

The Pushkin Museum to them. Pushkin several times during its existence changed its name and, therefore, the essence of the collected collection. It was always based on the name "Museum of Fine Arts", and only in 1937 this art museum was called Moscow the Museum of Fine Arts.

Creature

In 1893, I.V. Tsvetaev expressed an idea that had long been in the circles associated with art, that it was necessary to build an art and educational museum. His initiative was picked up, and on the basis of the competition a young architect R.I. Klein was chosen. An example was an ancient temple with a colonnade and glass roofs in the atrium courtyards.

Without the funds of the philanthropist Yu. S. Nechaev-Maltsev, the construction and selection of exhibits would drag on for a long time. He took on 2/3 of the costs (more than 2 million rubles). The bookmark took place in 1898, and the grand opening took place in 1912.

Collecting exhibits

Initially, there were many plaster casts, Hellenic and Roman sculptures and mosaics (copies). The state acquired the collection of the Egyptologist Golenishchev. These were the scripts.

After the revolution, new halls are opened, in which exhibits of various museums and private collections are transferred. During the war, bombing damaged glass ceilings, and for three years the halls were open to the elements. After the restoration and opening of the museum in 1946, active replenishment of its exhibits begins. From the collections of Moscow merchants S. Schukin and I. Morozov, canvases of impressionists and post-impressionists come. Their work is the pride of the museum.
