Olya seaport is located in the Limanskiy district on the shore of one of the largest branches of the Volga - Bakhtemir. The distance from the city of Astrakhan is approximately one hundred and twenty kilometers. The construction of the port of Olya began in the nineties of the twentieth century, after the government issued an official decision on the revival of the Russian fleet on the Caspian Sea.

A few years later, in 1997, this port began to process more than 400 tons of various cargoes for each calendar year. For the delivery of goods, a special access road was equipped, which allowed to significantly reduce the cost of delivery and handling. During the construction of the port, the road was connected to the R-216 and R-215 highways.

Since 2006, the port began to process more than two million tons of the most diverse cargo. According to experts, by 2020 the port of Olya will be able to handle more than ten million tons of cargo annually.

Transport

The port of Olya is connected with the federal highway Astrakhan - Makhachkala, through which passenger transportation is carried out daily. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the port established a ferry service, which functioned properly until 2012. Then it was closed for reconstruction.

In 2001, the port of Olya in Astrakhan began to carry out cargo and passenger transportation along the railway line. Short deadlines were allocated for the construction of railways in order to ensure constant supplies. Management did not delay the financing.

In the summer of 2014, the grand opening of the Yandyki branch, the port of Olya, took place. However, after the construction was completed, the station was unable to cope with the flow of goods, which hindered the operation of the Astrakhan hub. The average downtime of the trains varies between 13-15 days from the moment of receipt.

Physico-geographical characteristics of the port

The formation of the relief is a key factor for the delivery of goods to the Caspian Sea. In ancient times, this area was flooded, but gradually the water receded, which led to the formation of a plain. One of the main features of the area are the Barovsky hillocks.
