The Olympic Games are not only international sports competitions that attract thousands of athletes and fans from around the world. For all this holiday, colossal work in preparation for the Olympics is not always noticed. In order to adequately hold such large-scale competitions in one city, the host country is forced to spend incredible amounts not only on the construction of sports arenas, but also on the development of urban infrastructure as a whole.

Unfortunately, most Olympic venues require constant investment in their services, therefore, due to their unprofitability, such structures often become abandoned, and sometimes even ruins. It is about such places that we will tell in our article.

Sarajevo: from bobsleigh track to defensive structures

Image

The Yugoslav people were very proud that it was the Bosnian city of Sarajevo that was chosen as the venue for the 1984 Winter Olympics. Among the large number of sports facilities, the bobsled track was especially distinguished, not only by its cost, but also by the length and complexity of turns. Competitions were held at the highest level and it seemed that this track will soon become one of the most popular in the world. For several years it was used for its intended purpose, but then the war began.

During the siege of Sarajevo, artillery crews were located directly near the highway, and then bloody battles took place here. The curved track with high sides has become an ideal protective structure for soldiers. Until the end of the war, it was literally riddled with bullets. Since then, the bobsleigh track has never been repaired.

Gorhall's Abandoned Splendor

Despite a boycott from many countries due to the invasion of Soviet troops in Afghanistan, in 1980 Moscow hosted the Summer Olympic Games. In preparation for them, a huge number of sports facilities were built not only in the capital, but also in other cities of the former USSR.

One of these buildings was the city hall in Tallinn, the modern capital of Estonia. It was originally built as the Olympic Sailing Center, but was later used as a concert hall. In 2009, it was closed, and now there are hosted by lovers of graffiti, covering with drawings all the walls of the former Olympic facility.

Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing for a Time Left … to Birds

China, which never ceases to amaze the whole world with the scale of its projects, did this in 2008, when the Summer Olympic Games were held in Beijing. Colossal money was spent on preparing for them. What did the Bird's Nest stadium cost, the construction of which cost $ 480 million, and another 11 million had to be spent on its maintenance annually. Despite the fact that the Chinese authorities did not know what they would do with the object after the Olympics, they did not abandon such a large-scale idea.

After the games on the territory of the "Bird's Nest" almost no large-scale events were held. In 2010, he turned into a snow park, a tightrope walker showed his skills under his roof, a local football team played home games, but after her abandonment of the arena, only birds live here. But still, the stadium will still be used for its intended purpose - it will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games in 2022.

Brazilian failure with Deodoru

Image

When Rio de Janeiro got the right to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2016, most experts were skeptical of such an IOC decision. According to them, the Brazilian capital is better known for corruption and crime than for sports. Unfortunately, they were right: of the 27 sports facilities built for the Olympics, 15 became abandoned in just two years.

The most obvious evidence of failure was the Deodoru district, one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. The construction of sports facilities was supposed to breathe new life here, but failed. As a result, all the buildings, including the magnificent Water Sports Center, were abandoned and looted.

Atlanta: from the Olympics to ruined film location

Olympic facilities are not always built immediately before the games. So, the stadium in Atlanta, which in 1996 won the Olympic field hockey awards, was built long before that as the home arena of the local college. But as the students became less and less here, the building gradually fell into decay, and then completely turned out to be abandoned and began to collapse. In 2006, the stadium was used as a film location for the film "We Are One Team".

Sarajevo: from medals to death sentences

The mountains around Sarajevo have long been a favorite destination for skiers. It is not surprising that this place became even more popular when the Olympic facilities for the 1984 Winter Olympics began to be built here. In the mountains, new ski slopes, lifts, ski jumps and the judiciary appeared. Tourists could freely take pictures on the podium, where before that they handed medals to athletes.

Everything changed in the early 90s. When Sarajevo was under siege, the local mountains turned into a war zone. According to rumors, Bosnian soldiers shot prisoners near the Olympic podium. The place is still deserted, since there are still thousands of unexploded mines in the ground here.

Athens Water Sports Center

Against the background of constant financial problems in Greece, the holding of the Summer Olympic Games in 2004 was another serious blow to the country's economy. But the main failure was the Water Sports Center. It was built without a roof, and as a result, the athletes literally roasted under the Mediterranean sun. After the games, the complex was first drained, and then, after a thorough and unsuccessful search for investors, it was abandoned.

Hitler's Olympic Village

Image

The 1936 Olympics in Berlin was planned as propaganda of fascism. More than 5 thousand athletes at the opening ceremony welcomed Hitler by throwing his right hand upwards, familiar to Germany at that time. Not surprisingly, even an Olympic village in a militarized country was built near military barracks. Athletes quickly got used to both a large number of military personnel in the settlement territory and constant Nazi propaganda.

After the departure of national teams, the village was occupied by the military. There was a military academy and medical unit, and after the arrival of Soviet troops, prisoners of war were interrogated in former athletes' rooms. The troops were withdrawn only in 1992, and since then the village has been abandoned.

Rio Collapsible Water Sports Center

This building was originally designed so that after the Olympics it could be disassembled into several parts, each of which was transformed into small community centers for water sports.

Unfortunately, nothing good came of this idea. During the year, the building began to fall apart on its own, and the water in the pool turned orange. As a result, the structure was not dismantled, but simply left to fall apart.
