Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the Republic of Tunisia began in 1956. After the collapse of the USSR, the Russian Federation became its successor and officially relations between the countries were established on December 25, 1991.
History of Interstate Relations
The first meeting of the presidents of the two states took place in New York at the Millennium Summit in 2000. After that, in different years, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the delegation of the State Duma, and the Minister of Culture and Education visited Tunisia.
On October 23, 2011, elections to the National Assembly of Tunisia were held. Representatives from the Russian Federation were invited to observe the election process, and all conditions for the democratic expression of the will of Tunisian citizens were provided on the territory of the Russian Federation.
A number of trade and economic agreements on cooperation in the following areas were signed between the countries:

Trade relations are developing. In 2015, the volume of trade between Tunisia and Russia amounted to more than $ 800 million.
An agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy is being prepared for signing.
Important in the development of close friendly ties between states is humanitarian interaction. Cultural ties are maintained between countries. Russian artists and creative groups take part in national Tunisian festivals, Russian is taught in higher and other educational institutions of Tunisia, citizens of the country receive higher education in Russia.
In the Republic of Tunisia, the Russian diaspora is about 3.5 thousand people.

History of the Russian school at the Embassy
An educational institution was opened in 1977, but it was only an elementary school, which provided for the education of students up to grade 4. In 1994, a secondary school was opened, the graduates of which could already receive a full secondary education, and in 2007 it received the official status of a comprehensive school at the Russian Embassy.
