Big Kunalei is located 40 kilometers south of Ulan-Ude and 22 kilometers from the district center of Tarbagatay, among the picturesque low ranges, on the banks of the Kunaley rivulet, which gave the name to the village. This word is translated from the Buryat language as “fold”. The river winds between the folds of the ranges, forming small plains and valleys, in one of them the village of Bolshoi Kunalei appeared.

History reference

There is no exact date for the foundation of the village. This happened in the thirties of the eighteenth century, when the Russian Old Believers put the first houses here. In 1765, 61 Old Believer families came to the village, the so-called family, whom the Russian authorities expelled from the Belarusian lands during the first partition of Poland. Hardworking and friendly family quickly settled down in a new place away from wars and political unrest.

A sad tendency has been observed throughout Russia over the past decades: the rural population is eager to leave for the city, the villages are empty and are declining. Big Kunale is no exception. Today, about a thousand inhabitants live in it. However, family traditions continue to live, so the village impresses tourists with elegance, neatness and originality.
