For a long time, tribes of the Buryats, Mongols and Evenks, the indigenous people of Eastern Siberia, roamed the territory of the river basin. From the second half of the 16th century, Russian pioneers used Chikoy as a means of water movement in the development of the Trans-Baikal Territory. The written information that has reached us refers to the Peter and Paul Fortress, which was erected in the Chikoi mouth, on the island part of the area. In 1727, the fortress was moved upstream of the river. It was here that caravans with goods were completed for profitable trade with China.
