The owner of the cafe, to put it mildly, is confused - he cannot wash his windows because of the rules of the heritage. The institution was reopened as a cafe and bar in September, and before that, the nearly 100-year-old building was rebuilt after an earthquake. US $ 2.8 million was spent on reconstruction. And the windows were not properly cleaned after the repair was completed in 2017, because they are covered with an additional protective layer that can only be removed by a specialist.

The building has been used in industry since its opening in 1918, and over the years various cafes, bars and restaurants have been opened in it.

Why can't windows be washed?

Restaurateur Andrew Male said that the beautiful appearance of the building deteriorates due to windows that they cannot keep clean.

“We are very ashamed when customers come and ask why we don’t wash our windows, ” he said. “There is a beautiful view from our cafe, but there is a gap of 20 mm between the windows, which we can’t clean in any way.”

Male said that it would be relatively simple for cafe staff to remove the protective glass using suitable tools, but they were forbidden to do so. The rules were established by the Christchurch City Council, which paid for the restoration of the building. Since its opening, Takache Café has experienced a boom, but the condition of the windows has caused some concern among customers.

On the windows were placed ads explaining the situation. It says here that "some windows, such as this, are protected by an extra glass that does not have clips for easy removal."
