The 2 giant pandas Bao Mei and Brussels-Bao Di, who live in the Belgian zoo, received the prestigious Panda of the Year award. The prize is awarded based on the results of online voting, it was held in December 2019.
The organizer of the action is a website dedicated to pandas from all over the world. Indeed, now in the wild there are less than 2, 000 giant pandas, and only 600 animals live in zoos around the world.
Who picks the best pandas
Citizens of China and Great Britain, the USA and European countries, Japan and Indonesia, Canada, Thailand, Australia and South Korea join the selection. Russia also takes part in this global survey.
Specialists, veterinarians, animal welfare advocates, as well as panda fans can vote for their favorite bamboo bears, the best people and institutions. In total, 15 categories and nominations are offered. The prize has been awarded 7 times.
