Eloise James is the pseudonym of Mary Bly, a professor of English literature at the University of Fordham, known for her love affairs, which take place during the Regency era.
Early years and education
Mary was born in 1962 in Minnesota. The girl grew up in a family of writers, so from childhood she was instilled with a love of literature. Her father, Robert Bly, is the winner of the American Book Award for poetry, and her mother is a well-known author of short stories.
After completing a course at Harvard, Bly received a master's degree from Oxford University, after which she defended her doctoral dissertation on the Renaissance at Yale. Mary currently lectures at Fordham University in New York and runs the Creative Writing program. The writer is also known for her scientific articles published in the collection of the Association of the Modern Language - the most prestigious publication in the field of English literary criticism.
Beginning of a writing career
The career of the writer began quite unusual: husband Mary said that he was not going to have a second child until the family paid a student loan. Bly began to look for ways to earn extra money and, taking an example from her parents, wrote her first story, entitled “Strong Pleasures, ” which she immediately sent to the newspaper. The writer received a generous fee for this story, which was enough to fully repay the loan. Mary decided to continue writing and began to publish books under the pseudonym Eloise James, fearing that her colleagues would react badly to her occupation. Her books were translated into 9 languages, became bestsellers in the Netherlands and Spain, 12 of her articles published in the New York Times had unprecedented success. As the writer herself notes, she drew ideas from her teacher experience. Many of her books refer to Shakespeare's poetry, some citing famous works of the 16th century. Readers also note the literary speech of the main characters: Eloise observes that during her work she constantly has to read literature in the early British dialect of the English language, so the replicas of the characters are so similar to the language of the historical time about which the author writes. Many of her novels are published in a trilogy and represent a colorful description of the love relationship between the characters.
Mary Bly hid for a long time under the pseudonym Eloise James, but at a meeting of the faculty in 2005, she still told her colleagues about her second job. Later, in an article in the New York Times about the genre of a love story, she revealed her real name to readers. Bly is quite good at combining the work of a teacher and a writing career. Sometimes she hires assistants who look for her the necessary information about the details from the life of that era, about which Mary writes. Such a "double life" often attracts the attention of the press, but Mary is trying to stay away from publicity.
A family
The mother of the writer died of cancer, so Mary lived with her father, adoptive mother, sister and two brothers. Mary met her future husband on a blind date at Yale University. Alessandro Vettori, a teacher at Rutgers University, immediately fell in love with the girl, and soon they got married. The family now lives in New Jersey and has two children.
