The Republic of Armenia is located in the Caucasus, has no access to the seas and oceans, while the vast majority of the state’s territory is located at an altitude of more than a kilometer above sea level. Despite the fact that formally the country is located at a latitude corresponding to the subtropical climate, in most of the territory of Armenia the climate can more likely be called continental. It is characterized by hot summers and cold winters.
Given the presence in the country of both a large number of mountains reaching a height of more than 4 thousand meters, and plains, it becomes clear that it is necessary to speak with caution about the climate of Armenia in general. The air temperature at an altitude of 2000-3000 m is always lower than at the foot of the mountains, and this should be corrected when becoming acquainted with the country's climate.
Winter
Despite the formal location of the country in the subtropical zone, the winter in Armenia is cold - the mountainous terrain contributes. At the same time, even in the cold season, solar activity in the region remains significant - sunny weather is generally characteristic of the climate of Armenia. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature of -5 … -7 degrees is recorded in low-lying regions, and from -12 to -25 in the mountainous regions, depending on altitude and other geographical conditions.
By February, the average daily temperature reaches positive values, frosts are recorded mainly at night. The amount of precipitation in the winter varies in different regions of the country. A significant amount of snow falls in the mountains, which is normal for the climate of Armenia, although this is uncharacteristic for lowland areas.
Spring
In mountainous areas, spring comes late - only by April. In the lowland areas it gets warmer about a month earlier. The temperature can still drop to negative values, but during the day the thermometer stably shows + 8 … + 12 degrees. In the mountains at this time, the average air temperature is still negative.
In general, it is impossible to unequivocally answer the question of what climate is in Armenia, since the temperature difference, the difference in precipitation, the activity of air flows in the plains and mountains are significantly different. For example, a subtropical climate is observed in the south of the country, although for most of the territory of the country, as mentioned earlier, it is more likely continental.
This leads to a significant temperature difference between the regions. For example, in May in the lowland areas the air warms up to an average of 25 degrees, and in the mountainous areas - only up to 13, and frosts are observed at night.
Summer
In general, summer weather is set in the last weeks of May, however, in the mountains, summer only occurs at the end of June. The weather at first may be variable, it rains. Later, for three months, until the end of August, the air temperature stably stays in the region of 25-27 degrees, and in the mountains the average is about 10 degrees less.
In the summer on the plains, even at night, the thermometer column shows values of the order of 20 degrees. In July and August, there is practically no rain.
Fall
Soft warm September smoothly flows into moderate October and restrained cold November. If in the first month of autumn the weather more closely resembles summer, and the temperature in the daytime drops only a few degrees relative to August, then by November the average temperature even on the plains does not exceed 10-12 degrees. By the time the winds were already blowing in the mountains and heavy precipitation in the form of snow was falling.
