The most common student problem when leaving school or university is the lack of practical skills. For example, in our system the classical method of teaching has already been established - sitting at a desk with a notebook, pen and textbook. And without them, the student feels a swimmer loaded with knowledge, who does not know how to swim.

Practice is the best teacher

While some study books diligently, doing theory, others prefer to acquire knowledge based on personal experience and research. In this way, one Brooklyn family decided to educate their children: traveling the world and finding the best systems and methods.

For them, the current order seemed obsolete (at least those that were adopted in their native places), and therefore they decided to explore the world on their own in order to find out what is most effective in teaching.

What is this family

Hazel and Inyaki, together with their three youngest children, Alani, Amaya and Iker, and grandmother Julia call themselves "learning gypsies." They all come from Brooklyn and travel to different countries, study and evaluate pedagogical techniques and achievements in foreign places.

In 870 days, they covered approximately 366, 238 kilometers, traveled to 26 countries, visited 67 cities and 65 educational centers. Despite this, the cognitive journey continues. The couple work remotely while their three children take a distance course at their North American school. Thanks to this, the family has free time and funds for such a study, but the most important thing is interest.

Motivation

This initiative arose because the educational methods applied to children in schools do not meet modern requirements. The program has not been improved for decades. Therefore, students have only a small platform for creativity, the development of critical thinking and personal growth. What the school offers is not enough to form a strong and intelligent person.

Hazel and Inaki both worked as publicist writers. They decided to leave their office space to sort out the matter and develop the project. To do this, the researchers transferred to the staff of Hyper Island, the Swedish school of creativity and business, to work remotely in the field of world-wide education. So now, arriving in another country, they are carefully figuring out how the education system is built, what role teachers play in it, what material has more emphasis. Their work also includes meetings with experts and specialists in this field.

Activities

The family is currently in Texas - their location can be tracked on the blog.

They educate their children on their own, at home, while they themselves conduct large-scale research: they interview parents, teachers, politicians, ministers, journalists and, of course, the students themselves. On their account - 28 books read about education, all issues of TEDtalks on this subject, 25 schools attended and 120 people surveyed. The information received is recorded in the blog "Roma students".

Mentoring

In addition, Hazel and Inyaki follow innovations and current issues, which are also desirable to study in schools. It is about environmental education, sexual and domestic.

This study allows them not only to evaluate the preparation of children for adulthood, but also the couple to become the best parents and teachers.

What did they learn

First of all, the fact that the child should not be taught, but stimulated to self-study, foster interest in the subject and give freedom to natural curiosity. Forcing stuffing knowledge into a bored student is a bad idea. The couple even made a list of tips for maximum process efficiency:

  • instead of answering questions, on the contrary, asking them so that the student expands the field of knowledge and searches for logical answers;
  • Do not talk about well-thought-out plans, but involve them in their creation (for example, the family calculates the budget of the trip with the children);
  • when a child asks for help in business, you can’t do instead of him, but really help to figure it out yourself;
  • avoid screaming and try to make contact;
  • Practice active listening, not just use cheers you cannot discriminate against children's stories, because students are also personalities;
  • instead of entertaining a bored student, it is better to attract his interest in something worthwhile; there is something interesting in any occupation and subject;
  • accustom not only to modern life, but also to the fact that we ourselves make progress;
  • teach broad and analytical thinking, not stereotypes;
  • and most importantly, avoid tight schedules, add an element of spontaneity to school so that it does not become torture for everyone.
