The Swiss village of Mitholz is located next to the mountain of the same name. During the Second World War, an underground explosive storage facility was built inside this mountain.
Nobody knew about this warehouse until 1947. When a peaceful life was already in full swing, a tragedy came to the village of Mitholz. Detonated 7, 000 tons of explosives stored in an underground warehouse. Then 9 people died, the village was almost completely destroyed.

Everything changed when the underground warehouse began to operate again. The Swiss army used this place to store pharmaceuticals. After some time, it became clear that this place is still fraught with danger.
Risk of a new explosion
In 2018, a detailed survey of the warehouse was carried out. As a result, it turned out that approximately 3, 500 tons of unexploded ordnance remained in it.
The authorities decided on the need to remove ammunition from the underground warehouse. But during the work, they can detonate, and the tragedy in Mitholz can happen again. Therefore, appropriate measures have been taken.

Ammunition elimination work is planned for 2031. During this time, a lot of preparatory work will have to be done - the engineering plan, the transfer of railway tracks, the development of new ways of communication with nearby villages.
