Stary Oskol is a city in the middle zone of the European part of Russia. Located in the Belgorod region, on the banks of the Oskol River. Belgorod is 153 km away. In relative proximity to the city is the border of the Kursk region. The nearest city is Gubkin. Stary Oskol forms the Starooskolsky urban district. The city has various types of transport. Before the development of the Ukrainian crisis, Stary Oskol was a major railway center linking Moscow with Ukraine and the Crimea. The Moscow-Donbass railway line, which consists of two tracks, passes through the city. Now at the station of Stary Oskol only 2 trains stop: Moscow - Stary Oskol and Belgorod - Novosibirsk. Suburban electric trains also operate. Rail freight transport is developed.

Tram transport is represented by the so-called "light rail". It was created with the aim of quickly delivering workers from the city to a metallurgical enterprise.
