On February 20, the ten-day Berlin Film Festival kicked off, which turns 70 this year. This is a great event for the whole of Germany, because for over seventy years the festival has pleased moviegoers with its atmosphere. And the organizers do not plan to stop there.
What changed?
Carlo Chatrian is the new artistic director of the Berlin Film Festival, and Mariett Risenbeck is responsible for his management. Chatrian is a recognized expert in cinema history and previously led the festival in Locarno. Riessenbek worked for German Films, the national organization for the promotion of German cinema. Both follow in the footsteps of the great director Dieter Kosslik. The new leadership brought a breath of fresh air to Germany's oldest film festival. The program was also simplified, while before it included about 400 works, this year 340 films will be shown at the festival.
This year, 18 films participate in the international competition, each of which hopes to receive a Golden or Silver Bear award.
Outside of hollywood
Unlike in previous years, when at least one Hollywood film participated in the Berlin film festivals, this year they showed American films that were shot independently of major film studios. They were played by such famous actors as Javier Bardem, El Fanning, Salma Hayek and Laura Linney.

DAU Series
Russian director Ilya Khrzhanovsky worked for many years on DAU, a set of 13 feature films, series and documentaries created from 700 hours of material. Feature film “DAU. Natasha "takes part in the main competition in Berlin. Documentary film “DAU. Degeneration ”tells the story of the Soviet physicist Lev Davidovich Landau and is part of a special series at the festival.
President of the jury 2020
Jeremy Irons is the president of the jury this year. A British actor with Hollywood experience is led by an international jury of six actors, directors and producers from Germany.
More rewards
Carlo Chatrian and his new team, of course, also want to leave their mark on the Berlin Film Festival. The new director announced the second competition - a series of "Meetings". Fifteen films participate in the competition, including the debut film of Portuguese director Katarina Vasconcelos, Metamorphosis of Birds.

Five decades of a new movie
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the “International Forum of New Cinema” section, created especially for beginners in the competition, for their experiments and everything else. The new section director is Christina Nord. They will be showing thirty-five films, including Victoria, a Los Angeles desert documentary.
For the young generation
The Generation section has existed for a long time and is aimed at a youth audience. This year 59 new films for children and youth will be shown. The Dutch film Paradise Drifters, for example, tells of the adventures of three teenage drifters.
Hillary
A four-hour documentary series may turn out to be one of the festival’s biggest hits. It deals with the life and career of former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Hillary will be streamed worldwide by Hulu, a streaming provider, starting in March.
