Scott Stockman runs Stockman's Eggs, a family-run business that supplies fresh eggs to stores throughout Australia. He shared photos of an amazing find that was discovered at his poultry farm last spring.
Among the other eggs was one giant. To say that it stood out from all the others is to say nothing. An egg weighed 176 grams, which is almost three times the size of an average chicken egg.
But the main surprise awaited Scott when he saw what was inside.
What was hiding there
Inside the egg lay another one, only smaller.
This biological phenomenon is called counterperistaltic contraction. This happens when the egg, which was not ready for laying, returns to the reproductive system of the hen, and a new one is already formed around it. However, this is a rather rare occurrence. It’s not often that two intact eggs “live” together like this.
Photos of the amazing find quickly spread across the World Wide Web, becoming a sensation and astonishing everyone who saw them. Even many experts were confused.
“I’m trying to understand, from a biological point of view, why this little egg didn’t fall out, it’s very strange, ” said Professor Raf Freire.
Scott Stockman, who found the miraculous egg, his staff and family were no less astounded. “It's just unbelievable to see two perfectly formed eggs in one.”
