In 1979, based on the work of Anatoly Kalinin, the television series "Gypsy" was shot. The hero of the film is a man of a wide soul, however, he has experienced many troubles in his life. In the story, Budulai was supposed to die. However, he was so fond of Soviet television viewers that the director of the picture decided to shoot a sequel. This is the story of the creation of the series “Return of Budulai”. The actors who starred in this soulful film are Clara Luchko and Mihai Volontir.

The actors of the film “The Return of Budulai” - Luchko and Volontir - created on the screen a touching love story of a gypsy and a Russian woman. Claudia fears Budulai, but already in the first part it becomes clear to the audience that the woman has feelings for him. And when the gypsy suddenly disappears, she reveals to her son the truth. Since then, Ivan has been looking for his father.
Budulai disappeared from the village not of his own free will. Disaster happened to him. The bandits beat him and he lost his memory. Once in the city he was met by a familiar young gypsy. However, he did not remember her. Both Russians and Gypsies are present in the plot of the film “The Return of Budulai”. Director A. Blank initially decided that Clara Luchko would star in the lead role. Firstly, he felt sympathy for this actress. Secondly, Luchko is a Don Cossack by origin. So, no other artist could have played the role of a strong-willed strong woman so perfectly.
The filmmakers spent a lot of time searching for the leading actor. I needed an actor with a colorful gypsy appearance. But since this was not among the outstanding stars of Soviet cinema, they offered the role to Armen Dzhigarkhanyan. An actor of Armenian descent agreed. But, as always, he was extremely busy. Dzhigarkhanyan in the early eighties was perhaps the most sought-after domestic artist.
Then another, already little-known actor from Yerevan came to the test. He was short and had a noble, ascetic appearance. Perhaps this challenger was a true professional. However, Klara Luchko did not like him. The director brought the actress a very weighty argument: "I can not love him." And after Luchko suddenly remembered one Moldavian actor whom she had met on the set of one of the films. The actor's name was Mihai Volontir. He spoke with a terrible accent. But as soon as the director only looked at him, it became clear: this is Budulay. The artist, preparing for the shoot, pulled up a Russian. He did not want to be voiced by another actor. In addition, Volontir learned Kuznetsk craftsmanship and forged a real horseshoe.
By the way, in the fact that the continuation of “Gypsy” was written, the merit is primarily of Volontir. He did not stop persuading Blanc not to kill his hero.
Interesting Facts
The actors attributed the novel to the actors of The Return of Budulai. Luchko and Volontir spent a lot of time together. But it was a warm and extremely friendly relationship.
Mihai Volntir on the set of the film was assigned the smallest bid. Luchko received forty rubles a day. The volunteer was supposed to get seven. The proud Moldovan man was indignant and announced to the creators of the film that he did not need handouts and was ready to work for free. However, after the series was released, the money was still paid to him.
