The future director was born in Chicago, it happened in February 1943. Michael Mann was born into a family of an emigrant from Ukraine and a simple American girl. It is known that he had close relations with his father, he loved spending time with his paternal grandfather.

When Michael Mann was a teenager, his main hobby was music, the young man preferred blues. However, he never became a musician, which the master does not regret at all. His favorite subjects during his studies at the university were history, architecture and geology. Interest in the cinema of the young man arose thanks to the film "Doctor Strangelove", which was shot by Stanley Kubrick. Family legend says that it was after watching it that Michael decided to connect his fate with cinema. The future famous director decided to comprehend the basics of the chosen profession in London, where he began to attend one of the film schools.

First successes

Michael Mann lived in Britain for about seven years. The future famous director successfully combined classes at the film school with the creation of commercials, he happened to collaborate with Ridley Scott, Alan Parker. In 1968, the young man first attracted the attention of the public by filming student uprisings in Paris. Then he created the short film “Janpuri”, which was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.

The director’s return to the States took place in 1971, he immediately took up shooting the short film “17 days later.” It covered the fate of a journalist who returns to his native country after a mysterious disappearance for five years. Then he tested his abilities as a screenwriter, taking part in the creation of television projects Starsky and Hutch, Police Story, Vegas and others. He also had a hand in filming the series Criminal Stories and Miami Police, taking on the duties of producer.
