Caranx is a fish from the order of perciform. It belongs to the stavrid family, since it looks somewhat similar to these fish. Giant karanks, diamond karanks - all these are names of one kind.
Hawaiian fishermen call Caranx a symbol of strength. And all because the fish caught on a fishing rod is not so easy to keep, because it beats with enviable tenacity and force from side to side. And because of its weight and length, it is even more difficult to do.
What does a giant caranx look like?
You can catch a giant karanx, however, like all representatives of stavrid, in the waters of the Red Sea. In addition, lovers of exotic fishing can catch it off the coast of Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, Hawaii and Africa. The fact that it is the giant caranx that is caught can be understood by a number of its features:
- the length of the fish carcass, from head to tip of tail, is 170 cm;
- weight reaches 62 kg, as in an adult;
- the head of the fish is large, and the body is slightly flattened from the sides;
- the body color depends on gender: in males it is dark, almost black, and in females it is silver;
- the scales on the body of the fish are small and thin;
- the tail is a little pointed.
Types of Caranxes
Caranx fish can be of several types:
- Golden Caranx. This representative is endowed with an average body size of 40 cm, weight reaches 2-2.5 kg. Body color is golden.
- Great Caranx. The length of the body from head to tail reaches 1 m, weight - up to 20 kg. Fish live near the coast, mainly singly.
- Senegalese Caranx. This representative is the smallest species of fish. The length of the body does not exceed 35 cm. The body is strongly flattened from the sides, the head has a pointed outline. Alone, fish rarely travel, since they are schooling species.
Giant Caranx in vivo
Caranxes are shallow-water fish that carry out their activities at a depth of not more than 100 m. Their large accumulations are observed near reefs, in sea bays and in lagoons.
Immature individuals of fish move mainly in flocks, in which they gain the necessary skills for life. This is mainly about hunting, because in the pack, the chances of catching prey increase significantly. However, when the prey is surrounded, each karanx becomes for itself, therefore only the largest and more experienced representatives of the species manage to “snatch a piece”. Hunting of these fish occurs early in the morning, when their representatives are most mobile and active.
As soon as the Caranxes reach adulthood, their flocks disintegrate and each fish subsequently lives separately.
These representatives are horse-drawn predators and feed on other marine life. The target of their attack is small fish, cephalopods, and some species of crustaceans.
Caranxes are able to migrate in certain seasons. Their movement is carried out 30 km south of their permanent habitat, and young representatives can cover distances of 70 km.

Diamond Caranx fish are caught on an industrial scale. Fish hunting annually brings from 4 to 10 tons of catch. But such indicators do not at all threaten the numbers of these marine representatives, at least at this stage.
At sea resorts there are outbound fishing for tourists who take place on the high seas. Giant caranks are caught there, sometimes even in a competitive form - to catch the largest fish.

Resting in the hot countries of the Red Sea, inveterate fishermen simply can not miss such a form of entertainment as fishing. Catching a giant karanks is not a quiet and calm event, but a real extreme and a test of one's strength.
Since such a fish has a huge weight and length, then its fishing is not carried out using an ordinary fishing rod. The technique used for fishing is called trolling or casting.
The bait, which is mainly used to lure fish, is called a popper. One of the prerequisites for successful fishing is the correct casting of the bait. Caranx instantly responds to sound from a popper hit on the surface of the water and immediately seeks its source.
