Researchers in Florida, using a new approach to combat the destructive invasion of huge pythons, have caught one of the large enough existing specimens. Its length is 5.2 meters. A python of this size can easily cope with a deer. The female snake is longer than a one-story building, its weight is about 64 kg.

The captured python can be attributed to the largest ever caught in southern Florida, according to the Big Cypress National Wildlife Refuge.
A huge female was discovered by researchers using radio transmitters implanted in the body of male pythons. This allows you to track the movement of males, and therefore to determine the location of females. The reserve’s employees informed reporters that the researchers not only catch snakes that are believed to have entered this area when domestic snakes escaped or were released from their homes, euthanize them, but also collect research data and develop new fishing tools pythons. In addition, we are studying how pythons use the reserve.

Why do pythons threaten the reserve?
In addition to the discovered 5-meter female python, 73 eggs laid and developing eggs were found by her. Workers in the reserve inform that this species of reptile has no natural enemies in nature. This creates the conditions for their rapid reproduction, which poses a threat to small animals: hares, possums, birds and nature itself. The hungry python does not disdain either alligators or deer.
Pythons are considered an aggressive species. In South Florida, they began to appear around the 80s of the last century. At present, their species numbers, according to various sources, from 30, 000 to 300, 000 pythons. There is no doubt that it is necessary to reduce the number of this species, only it is impossible to cross the red line. In nature, everything must be balanced.
Python reduction ideas
The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission sponsors trapping and euthanasia programs for these reptiles. However, it is not possible to slow down growth due to the large number of eggs laid by them. In 2017, this commission suggested collecting ideas from the population to curb the increase in the number of pythons.
Among the ideas is a proposal to have mongooses, which are famous in Asia for their ability to kill cobras. As an example, the use of mongooses in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, where they managed to destroy snakes, which means they can kill the python.
