Not every native inhabitant of Moscow can boast of having visited all the museums of our capital. What can we say about visitors? Many of them don’t even know exactly which places to visit, where they are located and what is represented in them. We present to your attention a list of museums in Moscow and some facts about the most famous of them. Perhaps this will help you decide where exactly you will go after arriving in the capital.
The most famous gallery
Of course, you guessed that this refers to the famous State Tretyakov Art Gallery. Its buildings are located in Zamoskvorechye. The main facade of the gallery was designed according to the sketches of the artist Vasnetsov in 1901-1902. Its history began with the fact that in 1856 Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov decided to purchase the painting “Temptation”, written by Schilder, and then supplemented his collection with Khudyakov’s canvas. Over time, the paintings simply ceased to fit in the mansion of Pavel Mikhailovich.
Today, the Tretyakov Gallery annually receives about one and a half million visitors. It contains more than 57 thousand works. The collection collected here is truly priceless and is the property of the entire Russian people.

The largest museum of literature
It was formed in the capital of Russia in 1934. The main initiator, thanks to which the State Literary Museum appeared in our country, was Bonch-Bruevich (Vladimir Dmitrievich).
Over the entire period of its existence, this museum has become one of the largest repositories of artistic cultural values of our people. Here are collected not only personal archives of prominent literary figures, but also ancient engravings with images of St. Petersburg and Moscow, various miniatures and portraits of prominent statesmen, manuscripts and first printed editions of books, publications with personal autographs, drawings, rare photographs and other unique materials. The State Literary Museum is the repository of more than 500 thousand rare documents.

State Museum of A.S. Pushkin
This museum arose as a part of the GLM, but very quickly became an independent unit. The first exposition opened here in June 1961. It took quite a bit of preparation time - just 3.5 years.
From the very first day, a variety of objects began to be brought to the State Museum of A.S. Pushkin, which in one way or another are connected with the name of the great Russian poet. Workers were given furniture, porcelain, prints, manuscripts, books and portraits. Some owners of private collections also deposited their treasures in the museum.
The traditions laid down forty years ago continue to persist today. Not only exhibition halls, but also concert and conference halls are open for visitors, there is a reading room and a library, and there are game rooms for children.

Space Museum
One of the most unique museums in Moscow, of course, is the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics. Its discovery was timed to coincide with the anniversary date of 10. 04. 1981 - exactly 20 years have passed since the day of Yuri Gagarin's flight into space.
On the avenue of Cosmonauts, at the address: 111 Mira Ave., there is a unique monument - a monument to “Conquerors of Space”. It is here, in its basement, that the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is located. In previous years, there were only a few exhibits - models of satellites. Today the museum area is more than four thousand square meters.
Among the exhibits you can even see stuffed animals of the most famous dogs in the world - Squirrels and Strelka, the moon globe, a model of the first artificial Earth satellite, an automatic station for exploring the moon, the lander of the Mars-3 interplanetary station, spacesuits, meteorites and much more.
In memory of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
The memorial house-museum of A.P. Chekhov is one of the branches of the State Literary Museum. It is located in a building where the writer lived for a long time with his family. This is an old wing with a height of 2 floors, which has two facade bay windows. It is located at: st. Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya, d.6.
For visitors, the rooms completely restored the interior that was in them during the life of Anton Pavlovich. Using the descriptions and drawings of the writer’s relatives, he managed to restore the situation in his bedroom and office, the rooms of his sister and brother.
In the writer's office there is an inkwell decorated with a horse figure. A grateful patient gave her to Chekhov, with whom he refused to take the money and even gave her her medicine. On the table is a photograph of Tchaikovsky. On it, the composer left his autograph. Three halls of the building and an annex serve as premises for an exposition, which is dedicated to the life and work of Chekhov.
State Darwin Museum
This museum is one of the oldest and largest natural history museums in all of Europe. His scientific collections have been collected for a hundred years. Over 400 thousand various exhibits telling visitors about evolution are presented here. Today, the exposition has been equipped with the latest computer technologies. It was here that unified the most unique light and sound special effects. There is no such thing in any museum in the world.

State Historical Museum
This is the largest Russian national museum. In it you can see a variety of historical monuments created in ancient times and today. It is rightfully considered the largest research, cultural and educational center.
In order to make it convenient for visitors to navigate in the exhibition halls, informational materials were placed in the museum. Also, a huge number of monitors and screens are installed here. They help tourists to see objects that, for one reason or another, were not included in the exhibition. In addition, you can scroll on the virtual screen book, which is presented in the window.
